The latest National Statistics estimating the number of UK private sector businesses produced by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) were released on 24th May 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

‘Business Population Estimates for the UK and Regions’ includes data by legal status, industrial sector and for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and each of the English regions at the start of 2010.

‘Business Population Estimates’ uses broadly the same methodology as ‘Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Statistics’, but the series has been re-named to highlight the fact that significant improvements have been made to the methodology.
